BIG ADVENTURE: IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO SKI
Going for it on a glacier: spectacular spring skiing
AV-GLACIERSKI:TC—May is here, which typically means ski season is gone. But that doesn’t have to be the case, especially in years like this one with enough snow to make Al Gore look crazy. In fact, high above Whistler, B.C., things are just getting good.
“May might be the best time to ski the Blackcomb Glacier,” said Arthur DeJong, the resort planner for Whistler Blackcomb.
The glacier is in Blackcomb Glacier Provincial Park but is serviced by Whistler Blackcomb resort’s chairlifts.

WHITEWATER RAFT
Rapids fire: A wild time rafting on the American River
AV-RAPIDS:SA—The water coursing through the north fork of the American River is muddy and brown—exactly how Justin Orban likes it.
“It’s just like chocolate milk,” shouts the veteran whitewater raft guide. “It feels like Christmas morning!”
It’s 6 a.m. on a recent Monday, and the sun’s warmth has yet to enfold the crisp air at the Mineral Bar campground where Orban and 10 other raft guides with W.E.T. River Trips are about to launch a record-setting expedition. The goal: To raft the three forks of the American River in less than 12 hours, a total of 36 miles.

CAMP OUT
Idaho, Oregon desert canyon lands offer early-season camping with amazing views
AV-IDAHO:ID—Step out of your tent or camper in the morning and your eyes are immediately drawn to rock formations. The silhouettes of pyramid-, turret- and needle-shaped cliffs leave you in a trance, especially before that first cup of coffee in the morning.
It’s spring and it’s the best time to visit the high desert of Oregon and Idaho. You’ll be greeted by an array of colors from wildflowers to pastel-colored rocks highlighted with a brushstroke of morning or late-evening sunlight. Head out in the desert this weekend. And, if you want, take a hike or climb a cliff.

TRAIN HORSES
Trainer coaxes mustang back from the wild
AV-HORSETRAINER:SA—Her name is Feather.
She’s a mahogany-hued beauty who once roamed a high, wild corner of Nevada.
The 3-year-old mustang mare spent most of her life without humans. But in the last five weeks, a woman with an easy touch and a soothing voice is just about the only thing she knows.
Gena Wasley, 35, trains horses for a living, and she’s taken on a challenge unlike any before. She is one of 33 trainers who have agreed to transform wild mustangs rounded up from federal land into gentle creatures in 90 days for a competition and auction.

Lake offers outdoor opportunities for nature enthusiasts
AV-BASSLAKE:FR—Nestled at 3,376 feet in the Southern Sierra about an hour’s drive from Fresno, Calif., Bass Lake is one of the region’s premier recreation destinations.
Despite the numerous private homes and docks lining the lake, there is ample public access to hiking trails, shoreline, campgrounds and picnic areas.
